Lumps and bumps on our furry friends can be puzzling, but they don’t have to be scary. We understand how concerning it can be to notice a new lump on your pet. That’s why early detection is key to ensuring their health and happiness. Here’s why you should act promptly when you spot something unusual.
What Are Lumps and Bumps?
Lumps and bumps can range from harmless fatty deposits (lipomas) to more serious conditions like mast cell tumours. While some are simply a normal part of aging, others may require treatment. The only way to know for sure is to have them checked by a qualified veterinarian.
What Causes Lumps and Bumps?
Lumps can develop for many reasons, including:
- Fatty deposits (lipomas): Common in older pets and usually harmless.
- Abscesses or infections: Often caused by wounds or insect bites.
- Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that are generally benign.
- Tumours: These can be benign or malignant, and early detection is crucial.
Understanding the possible causes helps you stay informed and proactive about your pet’s health.
Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
While not all lumps are dangerous, watch for these warning signs:
- Rapid growth or change in size
- Ulceration or bleeding
- Firm or irregular texture
- Associated pain or discomfort
- Changes in your pet’s behaviour, such as lethargy or loss of appetite
Our Sleuthing Process
We use a procedure called fine needle aspirate (FNA) to uncover the nature of a lump. Here’s how it works:
- Collection: A small needle collects cells from the lump.
- Examination: These cells are stained and examined under a microscope.
- Diagnosis: We determine whether the lump is benign or needs further treatment.
This minimally invasive procedure gives us valuable insights without causing discomfort to your pet.
What Happens After FNA?
Once your vet examines the sample:
- Benign lumps: Often monitored or removed if they cause discomfort.
- Infections: Treated with antibiotics or minor surgery.
- Suspicious or malignant lumps: May require surgical removal and further testing.
Your vet will guide you through the best treatment plan for your pet.
Patient Story: Miscka’s Tiny Bump
When little Miscka the French Bulldog came in for her routine desexing, no one expected she’d also teach us an important lesson about checking lumps and bumps. During surgery, Dr. Christine spotted a tiny bump on Miscka’s head that was only 2mm wide. To be safe, she performed a fine needle aspirate (FNA), a quick and gentle test we can do in the clinic. The lump was so small that the needle was actually bigger than the bump itself!

Despite its size, the sample showed mast cells, meaning this little dot was actually a mast cell tumour. These can be malignant, so catching them early really matters. Once Miscka had recovered from her desexing, she returned for surgery to have the lump removed. And the good news? Pathology confirmed the entire tumour was successfully removed. Miscka’s prognosis is excellent, and she isn’t expected to have any ongoing issues.
Miscka’s story is a powerful reminder:
- No lump or bump is too small to check
- An FNA is really simple, using a needle no bigger than a vaccination needle
- Early detection can save a pet’s life
The next time you’re giving your pet a pat or cuddle, take a moment to feel for any little lumps or bumps.
How to Monitor Your Pet at Home for Lumps and Bumps
Catching a lump early can make all the difference. If the lump turns out to be malignant, prompt action could prevent it from spreading. For benign lumps, regular monitoring ensures they don’t grow to cause discomfort.
Regular checks can make a big difference:
- Run your hands gently over your pet during grooming.
- Keep a record of any lumps, noting size and location.
- Schedule routine vet visits for peace of mind.
Early detection is the simplest way to protect your furry friend.
