Bathing your pet is essential for keeping their coat clean and maintaining overall skin health. However, it can sometimes feel like a daunting task—especially if your pet isn’t a fan of water. To help make bath time a breeze, we’ve gathered some tips and tricks to ensure a positive experience for both you and your furry friend.

1. Lick Mats

The Ultimate Distraction One of the biggest challenges during bath time is keeping your pet still. A lick mat can be your best ally here. Simply stick it to the wall of the bath and spread your pet’s favourite treat, like peanut butter (be sure it’s pet-safe), on it. This reward is particularly useful when using a medicated shampoo, such as Malaseb® or Pyohex®, which requires a 10-minute contact time. Your pet will be so focused on their treat, they’ll hardly notice the time passing!

2. Master the Lather with a Sponge

A sponge is an excellent tool to help work the shampoo into your pet’s coat. Always remember to add more water before adding more shampoo to ensure a good lather. This will help the shampoo spread evenly and penetrate deeply into the coat, providing the best possible cleanse.

3. A Gentle Approach to Face Washing

Most pets don’t appreciate having water poured directly onto their face. To avoid this, use a damp cloth to gently clean around their face. This not only keeps the shampoo and water away from sensitive areas like the eyes and ears but also makes the experience much more comfortable for your pet.

4. The Comfort of a Towel Wrap

If you’re using a medicated shampoo with a required contact time, try wrapping your pet in a towel during this period. The towel will keep them warm and make them feel secure, reducing their anxiety. This technique is particularly effective for puppies and cats, who often feel more vulnerable during bath time.

5. Positive Reinforcement

The Key to Success Finally, it’s crucial to make bath time a positive experience. Incorporate things your pet loves, whether it’s a game, their favourite toy, a soothing massage, or simply lots of treats and praise. By rewarding your pet for their good behaviour, you’ll help them associate bath time with positive feelings, making future baths much easier.
